Things God Hates

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;(Ephesians 6:13-18)

When we get saved, we are a new creation.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
(II Corinthians 5:17)

God has provided some things with which to replace the old ways of life.

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
(Ephesians 4:22-24)

It was never intended that a person should get saved and continue on in their sin. It may happen, But God is not pleased, nor is Christ magnified by it. We find some things that God hates in Proverbs chapter six and in Ephesians chapter six we find some things that will help us to overcome the things that God hates:

I. A PROUD LOOK.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.  (James 4:6)

  1. Pride is a sin.

An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. (Proverbs 21:4)

  2. Pride is an abomination to God.

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. (Proverbs 16:5)

  3. Pride causes strife.

He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. (Proverbs 28:25)

  4. Pride goes before a fall.

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

  5. Pride has to do with the way we think.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. (Proverbs 23:7a)

therefore, we need to put on the helmet of salvation to combat it.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (Ephesians 6:17a)

  6. This speaks of the knowledge of salvation.
    1. When we realize we are helpless and can not save ourselves, it should remove pride.
    2. When we remember that the Lord Jesus Christ did everything needed for our salvation, it should cause pride to vanish away.

II. A LYING TONGUE.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (Ephesians 4:25)

  1. Lying is a sin.

Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: (Romans 3:13-14)

  2. Lying is foolish.

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. (Proverbs 10:18)

  3. A lying tongue will not last long.

The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment. (Proverbs 12:19)

  4. It also is an abomination to God.

Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. (Proverbs 12:22)

  5. Lying needs to be replaced with the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (Ephesians 6:17b)

  6. As long as we speak the things of God in truth, we will not be guilty of lying.
  7. How much better would this world be, if men would speak the truths of God.

III. HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. (Proverbs 1:10-19)

Their feet are swift to shed blood: (Romans 3:15)

  1. Today we see men shed innocent blood without even getting dirty, they do it by simply casting a vote.

Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. (Isaiah 59:7)

  2. The way to keep our hands clean before God, is to use them correctly.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16)

  3. We will have ours hands full shielding ourselves from the attacks of the devil.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  (I Peter 5:8)

  4. If we will daily live for God, there will be no time for shedding innocent blood.

IV. A HEART THAT DEVISETH WICKED IMAGINATIONS.

  1. This was the sin of Noah’s day.

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Genesis 6:5)

  2. It causes people to go backward.

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. (Jeremiah 7:24)

  3. God knows your heart.

Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day. And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
    (I Chronicles 28:7, 9)

  4. The way to keep our heart is to cover it with the breastplate of righteous.

    …having on the breastplate of righteousness;
    (Ephesians 6:14b)

  5. It is Christ’s righteousness that is imputed to protect from being lost again, but there is to be in the life of the Christian a practical righteousness of his own.

V. FEET THAT RUN TO MISCHIEF.

For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
(Proverbs 1:16)

  1. When we get in a great big hurry, we usually end up in sin.

Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. (Proverbs 19:2)

    “Haste makes waste.”

  2. We need to have our feet ready to carry the Gospel.

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; (Ephesians 6:15)

  3. You need to be prepared before you go.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (II Timothy 2:15)

VI. A FALSE WITNESS.

  1. Is deceitful.

He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. (Proverbs 12:17)

  2. Will be punished.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. (Proverbs 19:5)

  3. Will perish.

A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly. (Proverbs 21:28)

  4. The way to keep from being a false witness is to have our loins girded with the truth.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,(Ephesians 6:14a)

VII. SOWS DISCORD

A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. (Proverbs 6:12-15)

  1. Discord destroys unity.

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? (I Corinthians 3:1-3)

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (I Corinthians 1:10)

For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. (I Corinthians 11:18)

  2. The way to stop this is to enter into prayer rather than ridicule.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Ephesians 6:18)

  3. If we will spend our time praying, we wont have time to cause trouble.

VIII. YOU CANNOT PUT ON THE ARMOR OF GOD, UNLESS YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (John 3:1-7)

  1. You cannot possess the things that are spiritual until you first have the presence of the Holy Spirit.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
    (I Corinthians 2:14)

  2. Going through the motions of living for God without being saved will do you no good.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:21-23)

  3. What is the will of God; that men repent and be saved.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.(II Peter 3:9)
